Overview. This portal identifies and shares research studies being conducted in aspen (Populus tremuloides) communities or studies that have plots in aspen habitats as parts of broader studies. The portal's goal is to link resource professionals, enhance communication, and improve research and management efforts.

Research Database. The link below provides access to current aspen research projects. The database can be searched by study title, state, specific area within a state, and descriptors for type/subject of study. Each record can be examined in detail for the project’s abstracts, its lead investigator, and project contact information. The database is currently being restructured. Research Issues:

Key Research Papers Dealing with Aspen Management in the Western United States--Wayne Shepperd, Forest Silviculturist (Formerly with the Rocky Mountain Research Station) has established this list. The Aspen Delineation Project provides links to those publications.

The Department of Energy's Poplar Genome Based Research for Carbon Sequestration in Terrestrial Ecosystems program conducts basic research to obtain scientific understanding to help select, breed, or manage trees to meaningfully enhance long-term biological carbon sequestration in forested ecosystems. Both trees and soils are appropriate targets for long-term carbon storage.

Aspen Decline concerns Foresters. An extensive decline of aspen over a spectrum of sites, elevations, aspects, and productivity classes, with no apparent pattern or mortality that could be linked to growth environment has been observed in Colorado, Utah, and Nevada.
